Revised Mock Draft ’08

Well, the 2008 MLB First Year Player Draft (or Amateur Draft) is coming up this Thursday. As more and more info comes in, my mock draft transforms.

1st Round

#1. Tampa Bay Rays
Pedro Alvarez, 1B/3B
6’2/215
Vanderbilt
-I’ve changed this pick from Posey to Alvarez due to several reasons. #1) Alvarez is a better hitter than Posey. #2) They’ve already got John Jaso and Dioner Navarro at catcher long-term. #3) They lack depth at corner infield positions (namely 1B) and Alvarez can be moved from 3B to 1B to accommodate Longoria.

#2. Pittsburgh Pirates
Tim Beckham, SS
6’0/190
Griffin HS (GA)
-No change.

#3. Kansas City Royals

Brian Matusz, LHP
6’4/195
San Diego
-No change.
#4. Baltimore Orioles
Gordon Beckham, SS
6’0/185
Georgia
-Now that the O’s won’t be getting Alvarez, I think they’ll address the gaping hole at SS. Unfortunately the other Beckham is already off the board so we’ve got two of them in the top 5 in this scenario. Besides, there really is a lack of quality shortstops in this draft and there are quite a few pitchers. They’ll be able to grab a pitcher later on. If they don’t go with (the other) Beckham in this spot, I’d expect them to take a look at a 1B like Hosmer or Smoak.
#5. San Francisco Giants
Eric Hosmer, 1
B
6’4/210
American Heritage HS (GA)
-No change.
#6. Florida Marlins
Buster Posey, C
6’1/205
Florida State
-The Marlins are the lucky ones in this scenario in which a franchise/Joe Mauer-like catcher falls in their lap. They definitely have a need at the position and will be able to keep Gaby Sanchez at 1B long-term if they go this route. Of course, Posey can be moved around but it’s hard to find a good defensive catcher that can call games…let alone an offensive-minded backstop.

#7. Cincinnati Reds
Aaron Crow, RHP
6’2/195
Missouri
-The Reds still go pitching in this scenario but rather than taking a chance on a HS arm like Melville, they’ve getting stability in Crow. Widely considered by many to be the best overall pitcher in this draft, the Reds got themselves a bargain at #7. If he’s not on the board in this spot, I’d still expect them to go in the pitching direction, possibly Matusz or Melville, depending who’s still around.
#8. Chicago White Sox
Justin Smoak, 1B
6’4/215
South Carolina
#9. Washington Nationals
