Updated NFL Mock Draft

#1. Detroit Lions (0-16)

Proj – Mark Sanchez, QB, USC

2008 – Gosder Cherilus, OT, Boston College
-I think this pick will come down to Sanchez and Stafford since the Lions absolutely need to address their QB situation. After seeing the quick success of rookie QBs Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco this season, their front office may feel more comfortable spending big money on a rookie QB than perhaps they would’ve otherwise. Sanchez gets my vote but it’s really a toss up. I expect Sanchez to separate himself from Stafford somewhat by the time the draft rolls around but again, it could go either way.

#2. St. Louis Rams (2-14)
Proj – Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
2008 – Chris Long, DE, Virginia
-The Rams could go in several directions with this pick. They could address their offensive line, add a WR like Crabtree or could continue to build their defense and take one of the heralded linebackers or defensive ends. There’s a slight chance they could take Malcolm Jenkins with this pick to address their woefully poor cornerback situation as well. Given Orlando Pace’s age, Alex Barron’s sub-par play and their lack of depth at the position, Alabama’s Andre Smith seems like a logical choice. He’s easily the best linemen in the draft and has excellent size for a book-end tackle (6’5, 340 Ibs.).
#3. Kansas City Chiefs (2-14)
Proj – Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest
2008 – Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU
-Some analysts believe that Curry is not only the best defensive player in the draft but the best player overall. The Chiefs would have an excellent defensive foundation if they are able to land Curry the season after they drafted Glenn Dorsey. If not Curry, I would expect they’d probably take Crabtree to line up opposite of Dwayne Bowe. It’s possible that they could take whatever quarterback is left over but I’d be surprised. Tyler Thigpen played well last season and isn’t locked into a big-money deal so why would they want to take a major cap-hit taking a QB with the 3rd overall pick? It wouldn’t make much sense. A middle linebacker like Rey Maualuga would make a lot more sense for them in that regard and I wouldn’t be all that surprised if they passed up on Curry for him. It really depends on whether they want an outside or inside linebacker.
#4. Seattle Seahawks (4-12)
Proj – Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
2008 – Lawrence Jackson, DE, USC
#5. Cleveland Browns (4-12)
