Waiver Wire News

As you probably already know, the major league non-waiver trade deadline has passed. Teams can still make deals past the deadline but all deals must be made thru waivers. Waivers is a process in which the rest of the teams in the league get a chance to claim the player prior to making a trade. Waiver claims are awarded based on record. Lesser teams get first dibs. Once a player is claimed, the team that put him on waivers has a choice of trading him to the team that claimed him or can pull him off of waivers and reinstall him into their roster. If a player is unclaimed, then the team can work out a deal with whatever team they like. Waiver wire deals can be difficult because a lot of the time a lesser team will claim a player on waivers in order to block a rival from attaining that player. Everything done over the waiver wire is kept secret until the transaction is completed. This makes it difficult to really tell what is going on but some information gets leaked to the media here and there… Here’s what I’ve learned:

-Brian Giles, OF, SD
claimed by Boston
Many around the league assumed that Boston was trying to block another team from landing Giles but that apparently was not the case. The Red Sox claimed that they were seriously interested in Giles now that David Ortiz may be dealing with wrist problems for the rest of the season. However, for whatever reason, whether it was the distance from his family, playing time concerns or a whole host of other reasons, Giles himself blocked the trade. He had a limited no-trade claus in his contract and had the right to block a trade to Boston, which he did.
-Jarrod Washburn, LHP, SEA
unclaimed
The Seattle Times is reporting that starting pitcher, Jarrod Washburn, has cleared waivers and can now be traded to any team. No surprise here. The catch with waiver wire claims is when you claim a player you are also claiming his contract. Salaries cannot be eaten by the original team when trading via claims. That’s exactly why no one claimed Washburn. There are plenty of teams with a need for starting pitching but none of them want to pay him the $10 million he’s owed this year. If this report is true, the M’s are now free to work out a deal with whatever team they want (Yankees, I’m looking at you) and now have the option of eating some of his salary (for the promise of a better prospect return).
-Al Reyes, RHP, TB
designated for assignment
A designation for assignment is a little different than the waiver process. By designating a player for assignment a team clears a spot on their 40-man roster and then have 10 days to either trade, release or send that player to the minors. Reyes has been battling shoulder problems all season and even though his overall numbers don’t look bad, the roster spot was needed for the recent acquisition of relief pitcher, Chad Bradford (who was claimed off waivers) from Baltimore. The team now has the option of putting Reyes on waivers. If he clears waivers (which he won’t), the team could then send him to the minor leagues (that is, if the veteran accepted the assignment). By designating a player for assignment, that player can forgo the waiver process and can be traded immediately. That way, the team can get a player in return rather than simply getting rid of the contract. Teams with the worst record still get first dibs on trading for the player. Expect Reyes to be traded within that 10 day window.
-Brian Falkenborg, LHP, LAD
designated for assignment
The Dodgers designated Falkenborg for assignment after allowing 8 runs in 11 innings. Falkenborg has pretty much been a career minor leaguer and it’s unlikely that he’ll be placed on waivers or traded. His contract isn’t burdensome and there likely wouldn’t be much interest in the veteran reliever. I expect him to accept his minor league assignment. If he does not, he will be released.
